So today is my last day of freedom. This time next week I’ll be getting off a bus with a Drill Sergeant in my face to begin 9 weeks of the closest thing to hell I’ve ever had in my life.

For the past several days I’ve felt like a terminally ill patient who’s trying to prepare the best she can for the inevitable, making sure things are taken care of for when I’m not here anymore. I’ve taken things off walls, consolidated my stuff in one part of the house so it can be gone through easily, set up payments for my bills, and put my car in the garage. It’s a symbolic death, leaving everything behind, knowing that I will never again sit at my desk in my room, check out books from the library here, drive down to my sister’s on a whim. If anything, I’ll be back for a visit, and I don’t know when that might be. It’s that unknown, that variable, that makes it a little scary.

These past couple of weeks it has really set in that I have no idea when I’ll be able to come home even to move my stuff. I’ll leave almost directly after basic for my job specific training and won’t be done with it until close to Thanksgiving. This means everyone at my first duty station will have already put in for holiday leave, so more than likely I’ll be working half days doing shitty details.

To cap it all off, word is that I’ll likely be headed to a base in the NW going in to the coldest months of the year and I have no experience dealing with extreme cold. I’ve lived in the South all my life. It’s also entirely likely that the unit I get sent to will deploy at any point, and I’ll be spending my holidays in Afghanistan.

All I can tell myself is…well, I wanted change. I’ve definitely got it now. What I have to keep in the back of my mind though is that I also wanted job security, advancement options, and the military background/experience to add to my resume. I wanted career options where I had none, and I wanted to finally and formally leave home and be fully independent again. Finally, finally I will have that. And whatever hell I have to go through, whatever risks I have to take to accomplish that, so be it, because the bigger feeling I have now is promise. For the first time in ages I feel I can hope to find success, and I have a much broader scope than I ever had before. Now I can wind up anywhere in the world, doing anything.

That thought will sustain me through the next several weeks, and knowing that I still have the support base back here through my family, because whenever I get back here, they will be here.

I can’t get excited about this. Here’s why:

Just because the biblical lore says Gabriel kills the Leviathan, or sends it to hell, whichever…does not mean it will be so in Supernatural. They have this ability to ignore canonical texts and doctrine… Taking it that much further, there could be scores of other archangels we haven’t met yet. Catholicism and Judaism both only recognize four, BUT other religions recognize more. Frankly, if it came down to any already mentioned archangels, I think it would Raphael and Uriel coming back—though it may not be Uriel either since Kripke didn’t recognize him as an archangel. Christianity says Uriel, Islam says Azrael, so we’ll see. Either way, Gabriel doesn’t seem the likely candidate to get into another showdown when the first time he ran to avoid one, and the second time when he did stand up, he got killed.

Could I see him teaming up with Cas and the boys? Sure. Could I see him making a grand stand again like he did with Lucifer? Not really. Do I think he’ll be back eventually? Mmmmaybe. If he did/does, I’d see his reintroduction as the boys walking into one of his tricks—because that would be his classy way of letting them know he’s back. Once they realize that it’s the type of thing he would do and they start wondering if he’s really dead, *snap* here’s Gabriel!

The United Church’s stance, in my dealings with it, has mostly been something to the effect of “We don’t really care if you don’t actually believe in God, just concede that there are worthwhile lessons to be had in the bible.” They have a very strong emphasis on community and taking care of each other in a time of need, and probably put the strongest backing behind gay marriage I’ve seen out of all the churches in Canada.

I agree. I don’t identify with any religion but I was raised on Christian values. I don’t believe in god or the stories of the bible but I believe in the messages and morals that are taught. I don’t believe that I would be the person I am without them.

I will always value the lessons of the, my knowledge of religion, my appreciation and respect of nature, my belief in the immortal soul, fidelty and trust, service to fellow man, faith, hope, and charity.

These things are important to me and I would recite my memory work if I believed people know what it meant anymore.
